Watch a one-of-a-kind table or chair emerge from pieces of Kentucky hardwood. See precious metals and stones transformed into wearable treasures. At the Appalachian Artisan Center Studios, located just down Main Street from the AAC Shop and Cafe, artists participate in a unique program that allows them to grow their businesses with support on many levels.

In spring 2007, the Appalachian Artisan Center Studios opened in the Bolen building located at 85 W Main Street. The Studios program is part of the Appalachian Artisan Center’s efforts to help artists create and grow their own successful small businesses. Located in downtown Hindman, this first building in the AAC Studios program houses 10 artist’s studios. Work can be purchased there, tours taken, and workshops are held to guide artists to a point of running their own independent businesses. The current Master-Artists-in-Residence are Kevin Blomenkamp in jewelry and David Wright in wood. The current tenants on the jewelry side are Jan Stanfill, Nancy Brown, Gena Goodrich and Julie Cain.  The current tenants on the wood side are Michael Holliday,  David Fryman, Jerry Howard and John Trusty.

WoodshopThe Appalachian Artisan Center Studios program is currently recruiting artists who want to create, stabilize and/or grow their small businesses. Using the incubator model of economic development we help small businesses start and grow by providing them with: assistance with business issues such as marketing and accounting, access to shared workshops with professional-quality machinery, affordable studio space, a retail marketplace for their work, and a community that provides support and assistance to help each other as they grow their businesses.

The AAC is renovating a third Main Street building, the Cody, that will house an additional 24 artist studios. We anticipate filling MAR positions and accepting studio artists in other mediums by 2011. This is a great time to get involved with a dynamic and multi-faceted project that is transforming downtown Hindman, Kentucky into a community rich in arts-based business endeavors. The Appalachian Artisan Center Studios program is currently looking for people who want to participate in this exciting endeavor—please help us spread the word. Interested parties should contact the Center at (606) 785-9855 or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .
